My coworkers and friends worry that I’m lonely, that I’m not visible or connected, and that remote work won’t be as rich or as full of an experience compared to those who will have a chance to return to the office. Seventy-nine percent of respondents also said they’d be more loyal to their employers if they had flexible work.ĭespite these findings, and the more recent data collected during the pandemic that suggests the majority of workers want more flexibility in their jobs, many people in my life assume that I’m suffering or that I will - eventually - regret my decision to accept a fully remote role. In a 2017 FlexJobs survey with 5,550 respondents, 78% of respondents said that having a flexible job would likely result in them leading a healthier life (eating better and exercising more), and 86% said they’d be less stressed. Why My Answer Is Mostly “Yes”Įven before the pandemic, many employees hoped for more flexible work arrangements. Will I really be happy with never returning to an office? Did I make the right choice? But now that our company’s “return-to-office” date has finally arrived, I find myself reflecting more on my decision to stay remote. I accepted and have been a fully remote employee since June 2021. I applied, interviewed, and was offered the job as the editorial audience director. I’d become an effective communicator and collaborator in the virtual realm, and honestly, I’d fallen in love with the flexibility remote work provided.

I knew how to manage a team and myself from the comfort of my kitchen table. I had gotten used to WFH during the pandemic. But something else in that job description stood out: The location was listed as “remote.” It underscored strategy, leadership, creativity, and a digital skillset - basically all the things I was looking to tackle in the next stage of my career. So, when Covid forced my team and I into remote work, I was ready to take on the challenge.Īfter a year of working from home, I spotted a job opening at Harvard Business Review. Like many people, I had my doubts about whether sitting in traffic was necessary to be productive, and about whether in-person interactions were the most meaningful ones. Monday through Friday, I commuted an hour and a half into the city and two-and-a-half hours home every day. When the pandemic first started to take hold in the U.S., I was a senior editor leading a team of journalists at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Up until Covid, work had always been an in-office experience for me. Forty hours a week, I work from my home in Atlanta while the rest of my team re-enters our offices in Boston, Massachusetts.
